The Energy Bill would set new efficiency standards for appliances such as dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators and freezers, require more efficient lighting, and speed up Energy Department action on new efficiency standards after six years of delay.
Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are a simple way to improve energy efficiency. Replacing four 100-watt incandescent bulbs that burn four or more hours a day with four 23-watt fluorescent bulbs yields the same amount of light and saves at least 1,356 kilowatt-hours of electricity and over $100 over three years.
Reductions in CO2 emissions from these lighting and appliance provisions alone would reach 194 million tons per year below business-as-usual by 2030; equivalent to the annual emissions from 49 coal burning power plants. |
